|ZADAR - Zadar County County Božidar Longin returned from China where he organized several meetings at the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia, where he presented the development possibilities of the County of Zadar and agreed on forms of cooperation.|
Are you satisfied with the outcome of the trip to China?
The impressions of our visit to China are extremely positive. We have held several constructive high level meetings at the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia, with ambassador Nebojša Koharović. Our interlocutors were the leading people of investment funds in China under state supervision. So we talked to Yu Jiang, CQAG's director, who is currently one of the largest Chinese investors abroad, under the direct management of the Ministry of the Economy. We also talked with Han Taoma, General Manager of Delong Yuntong, who specializes in logistics and portfolios and work and cooperate with more than 500 ports around the world. The Chinese are interested in investing in Croatia, especially in infrastructure projects. About the topic, as well as other possibilities of co-operation, have already been discussed by Prime Ministers of Croatia and China, Andrej Plenković and Li Keqiang, at the end of November 2017 in Budapest, at the Summit of China and 16 Central and Eastern European countries, Longin said in an interview for Večernji list.
Is the port of Gaženica in the interests of Chinese businessmen?
Gaizen's potentials are enormous and many become aware of it. We are looking forward to a passenger concessionaire soon to ensure that Zadar becomes the main port for cruisers and, in parallel, complete the project of a large fishing center. After that, the development of freight traffic and the Ro-Ro terminal is followed, where we can achieve cooperation with Chinese investors. I have repeatedly repeated that cargo ships sailing over the Canal Gaženica will shorten the 10-12-day route compared to ports in the northern part of Europe. Therefore, it is not surprising the interest of many renowned companies for the new port in Zadar. The Chinese interest in port investments has also been confirmed at the recent Croatian-Chinese economic forum in Shanghai.
Did the Chinese show any interest in investing in Zadar - Knin?
Certainly, the reconstruction of the line from Zadar to Knin is a strategic project for our county and beyond. We have introduced them to the Zadar County Integrated Traffic Strategy, where we have combined all the advantages we have on our road, maritime, air and rail traffic in our region. Project documentation for railways modernization is currently being drafted, and when the overall value of the investment is completed, the financing method will be sought.
Have you visited one of the most famous mobile phone manufacturers in the world?
We have visited the technology genius Huawei and others impressed with what we have seen and the technology they have. I am particularly happy that the Chinese have shown interest in cooperating with the University of Zadar on the transfer of knowledge and we will certainly work in the next period, in cooperation with our University. To begin with, their managers announced their arrival in Zadar where they would lecture on the technological achievements of a renowned Chinese company. Cooperation between Croatia and China in the areas of science and culture was announced by Chinese Ambassador to Croatia Hu Zhaoming during a recent visit to the Zadar County by holding a lecture at our University.
Have some specific agreements reached in China?
The most concrete part of the visit was an agreement to establish cooperation with the Hainan province of China. We will sign a charter on friendship and cooperation with Hainan in April this year during the BOAO for Asia business and economic forum. Otherwise, the Hainan island region is located in the very south of China, the tourist region is the most developed region and its carrier Hainan Airlines is among the largest airlines in Asia.
Is there still interest in a direct airline linking Zadar with China?
They specifically expressed interest in direct flights to Zadar, especially after Gaženica became the main port for cruisers. Last year, more than 150 million Chinese people traveled to various tourist destinations, and Croatia is one of the newly-discovered destinations. During 2017, our country was visited by some 200,000 Chinese tourists, and this cooperation is certainly a good opportunity for the development of a new tourist market. For direct flights to China, we have to extend the landing path at Zadar Airport for 700 meters and see how it will be realized. One of the options is concession, but the state will decide on it, as the majority owner of the airport.
