BELGRADE - Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic said yesterday that Serbia’s goal is to obtain the candidate status for EU membership by the end of the year.

Djelic stated at the conference "How Many More Steps to the EU" organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation that the goal to get candidacy status for membership in the EU during the chairmanship of Spain and the process of ratification of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement would begin after the report of the Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz on Serbia's cooperation with the court.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that Serbia does not require any privileges in the process of its European integration and is already preparing the answers to the EU questionnaires.

According to him, after receiving candidate status it is important for Serbia to get the concrete date for the opening of the pre-accession negotiations.

Djelic said that the current assistance Serbia is getting from the EU is approximately €200 million annually, while full membership would provide between two to three billion euros per year.
