Đukić-Dejanović: Serbia's ruling coalition is "stable"

BELGRADE - Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović (SPS) said that the ruling coalition is stable despite disagreements over the Law on Information, B92 conveys.

“The ruling coalition is not at risk despite disputes regarding the changes and additions made to the draft of the Law on Information,” Đukić-Dejanović told daily Danas.

Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović, of the ruling Socialists (SPS), said that the fate of the law remains "very much uncertain". If, however, the government's legislation pertaining to the media scene in Serbia is not adopted, this could have serious consequences, believes political analyst from the Center for Researching Alternatives Srećko Mihajlović.

“If the law does not pass, the government will probably fall. There is a possibility that the government will stay in power, of course, but the experience so far with the work of government and the fall of government tells us that this government will probably not last,” he said.

Đukić-Dejanović said that just because ruling party officials are in disagreement regarding one issue, "that does not mean that they do not agree about anything and that they have differing stances on everything".

“That is just not true, even though I do not deny the great importance of the Law on Information and the importance of the media,” she said, adding that the other laws waiting to be adopted are no less important, but also that MPs "need vacations and time to relax as well".

While some ruling coalition parties are still deciding on whether to vote in favor of the law, the opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) has called on the rest of the opposition to be present in parliament and prevent its adoption.
