ZAGREB - The trial for the murders of the co-owner of Croatian political weekly, Nacional, Ivo Pukanić and his colleague Niko Franjić begins today in Zagreb.

Robert and Luka Matanić, Amir Mafaljani, Željko Milovanović, Bojan Gudurić and Slobodan Đurović stand accused of the murders. One of the six accused for the double murder, Bojan Gudurić, who surrendered himself yesterday to the police in Banja Luka, will be extradited to Croatia.

The indictment states that the murders were ordered by mob boss Sreten Jocić, aka Joca Amsterdam, in Serbia, in the first half of 2008, in order to prevent Pukanić from publishing information about criminal groups' activities in the region.

The indictment also reads that Đurović was ordered to organize the killings for a sum of EUR 1.5mn. Pukanić and Franjić were killed in a bomb blast in the Croatian capital in October 2008.

Very strict security measures have been taken for the trial, which attracted great public interest in Croatia.
