ZAGREB - "Zero tolerance for illiquidity, i.e. failure to pay within deadline, needs to be introduced", Velimir Šonje said at the conference 'Together on the path to recovery'.

The state is settling its liabilities in time, Šonje repeated finance minister's statements, but he stressed the illiquidity of public companies.

"30-day payment deadline should be introduced, as well as fines for violators", Šonje reminds of EU directives and calls for strict regulations.

"Illiquidity leads to new kind of corruption", Petar Lovrić, representative of SMEs at the Croatian Employers' Association (HUP) said.

Lovrić sees the selection procedure when deciding which contractor to pay first as a source of corruption. Therefore, he advocates for 30-day deadline for large companies and 60-day deadline for SMEs, along with a system of punishing those who breach the deadline.
