REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS
Croatia ranks 78th according to media freedom
Author/source: SEEbizZAGREB - Reporters without Borders (RSF) released its report on media freedom today in which Croatia ranked 78th, down 33 places from a year earlier.
The main reason for such downgrade is the killing of journalist Ivo Pukanić and his colleague Niko Franjić as well as the negative pressure on investigations of war crimes during 1991-1995 war. Journalists who violate the taboo of Croat-Serb relations become the target, mostly by organized crime groups, the report reads.
All neighbouring countries outranked Croatia, i.e. Hungary ranked 25th, Slovenia 37th, Italy 49th, Serbia 62nd and Montenegro was 77th according to media freedom.
